Luke's Story Cont.
After more testing I found out he also had a skull fracture and had suffered a stroke which paralized the right side of his body. I was shocked and devastated that someone I had trusted had hurt my innocent child. I felt numb and helpless knowing that my son's life had been changed forever because of one person's loss of self control.
Today 2011
Today Luke is still overcoming the challenges resulting from his brain injury. He attends physical and occupational therapies weekly. He wears a leg brace on his right leg to help him walk correctly. Every 3 months he receives Botox shots to reduce the spasticity (tightness) in his right arm and leg muscles. He had surgery to correct drifting of his eyes due to the left's weakened muscles. He has some developmental delay and behavioral problems, but he works hard and is in a normal classroom with his peers. He has made better progress then the doctors gave me hope for, and I love it that now people hardly notice his challenges.
Luke is my shining light, and my hero. Sometimes it is hard and seems his childhood is consumed with tests, therapies, evaluations, and doctors I get upset knowing this did NOT have to happen. On those days I look at his sweet smile and know he will overcome it all. I still have my sweet boy, he was one of the lucky ones, we won't forget that.
No child deserves to be shaken.
